How Many Wires Fit in EMT?
Select a THHN/THWN-2 conductor size and EMT trade size, then enter the total number of installed conductors.
Important — conduit fill is not ampacity: A passing fill result verifies only the same-size conductor count within this chart scope. It does not verify ampacity adjustment, voltage drop, equipment limits, pulling tension, bend limits, conductor jamming, or the code edition adopted by the authority having jurisdiction.

An em dash means “none permitted in this raceway size,” not missing data. Annex C maximum counts are authoritative for this same-size lookup. Nominal EMT trade size is not its actual inside diameter.
How to Use the Pipe Fill Chart
- Confirm the raceway is EMT and all conductors in the lookup are the same THHN/THWN/THWN-2 size.
- Select the conductor size and the proposed EMT trade size.
- Read the maximum count, then enter the planned count to check whether the selected size fits.
- Use the first-listed-size result when sizing from conductor count.
- Complete separate ampacity, adjustment, voltage-drop, grounding, bending, and pulling checks.
Terminology: “Pipe fill” is common field language. “Conduit fill” or “raceway fill” is the precise electrical term.
Which Fill Percentage Applies?
- One conductor — 53%
- The maximum permitted cross-sectional fill is 53%.
- Two conductors — 31%
- The maximum permitted cross-sectional fill is 31%.
- Three or more — 40%
- The maximum permitted cross-sectional fill is 40%.
- Short nipples
- A separate limited rule can allow greater fill only when every qualifying requirement is satisfied; verify the adopted NEC edition before using it.
Why some Annex C cells show 1 or 2: those maximum counts already reflect the applicable one- or two-conductor condition. Do not recalculate those cells using a blanket 40% limit.
Area Method and Worked Examples
For mixed conductor sizes, add the approximate area of every insulated conductor and compare the total with the allowable raceway area.
For same-size conductors, use the Annex C maximum count directly. The approximate area values shown by the interactive visual are explanatory and can differ slightly because published table dimensions are rounded.
Example: nine #12 conductors
Nine #12 AWG THHN/THWN-2 conductors are listed for 1/2-in. EMT. The approximate occupied area is 9 × 0.0133 = 0.1197 in².
Interpretation: the listed count fits, but it is at the maximum count for that trade size; ten requires the next listed EMT size.
Mixed conductor sizes
This same-size matrix must not be used for mixed conductors. Use the Conduit Fill Calculator to sum different conductor sizes and quantities.
Common Pipe Fill Mistakes
Using nominal conduit size as ID
Trade size is a designation, not the raceway’s actual internal diameter or area.
Ignoring conductor insulation
Conduit fill uses the outside dimensions of the insulated conductor, not bare copper area.
Using 40% for every case
The conductor-count condition changes the permitted fill basis.
Stopping after fill
Physical space is separate from ampacity adjustment, pulling feasibility, and local code compliance.

Pipe Fill Chart FAQs
The maximum depends on EMT trade size and insulated conductor size. Select both above to read the Annex C maximum count; Annex C accounts for the applicable one-, two-, or three-plus-conductor fill condition.
They usually refer to the same task in field usage, although conduit fill or raceway fill is the more precise term.
Yes. Installed equipment grounding and bonding conductors occupy raceway area and must be included.
No. Add the approximate insulated areas for every conductor group and use a mixed-conductor fill calculation.
No. Fill is only one requirement and does not replace ampacity, adjustment, voltage-drop, equipment, pulling, or local-code review.
