The historical EPA table lists 750 gallons for one or two bedrooms, 900 gallons for three, 1,000 gallons for four, 1,250 gallons for five, and 250 additional gallons for each bedroom above five. Because this calculator’s default local floor is 1,000 gallons, the default result becomes 1,000 gallons for one through four bedrooms.

Treat the displayed result as a residential planning capacity to check against local requirements and available approved tanks—not as proof that the entire septic system is adequately designed.
When the bedroom reference controls
If the bedroom-based reference is larger than the entered local minimum, the reference value becomes the basis for the rounded recommendation.
When the local minimum controls
If the local requirement is larger than the bedroom reference, the calculator uses the local value before rounding. This is why entering the actual jurisdictional minimum matters.
When an existing tank is entered
The comparison tells you whether the entered tank capacity meets or exceeds the calculator’s planning recommendation. It does not establish that the existing tank is legally approved, structurally sound, watertight, or correctly configured.
Example: local requirement changes the answer
Suppose the same four-bedroom home is in a jurisdiction requiring at least 1,200 gallons. The bedroom reference remains 1,000 gallons, but the local minimum becomes the controlling input. The calculator then rounds 1,200 gallons upward to its next 250-gallon planning increment:
This does not mean every 1,200-gallon local requirement legally becomes 1,250 gallons. It means the calculator deliberately rounds upward in 250-gallon planning steps. Always check what tank sizes and nominal capacities the local authority actually accepts.
Units, Local Minimums, and Existing Tank Checks
The calculator’s unit controls change how capacity is displayed without changing the underlying physical volume. The local-minimum and existing-tank inputs should describe liquid capacity, not exterior dimensions or an unrelated tank rating.
- U.S. gallons and liters: use liquid-volume units consistently. NIST lists one U.S. gallon as approximately 3.785 liters; the Imperial gallon is different.
- Local minimum: enter the required liquid capacity from the applicable state, county, health-department, or adopted code source—not a generic online recommendation.
- Existing tank comparison: use the tank’s approved or documented liquid capacity. Exterior dimensions alone do not prove usable liquid capacity.
- Nominal tank labels: confirm what the manufacturer and permitting authority mean by the listed capacity. Internal components, operating level, and approved configuration matter.
- Metric display: the calculator still applies its 250-U.S.-gallon planning step internally, then displays the equivalent metric volume. One 250-gallon step is about 946 liters; the calculator does not round in 250-liter increments.

Common Septic Tank Sizing Mistakes
The largest errors usually come from using the wrong design basis or assuming tank capacity alone determines whether a septic system will work.
Using current occupants instead of the recognized bedroom count
A residential design may be based on potential occupancy represented by bedrooms. A lightly occupied four-bedroom home does not automatically become a one- or two-bedroom design.
Leaving the default local minimum unchanged
The 1,000-gallon default is only a planning floor. If the applicable local rule requires another value, leaving the default in place can produce the wrong recommendation for your jurisdiction.
Assuming a common online chart is the law
Bedroom-based charts vary because codes and historical references vary. Use generic tables to understand the calculation, then verify the binding local requirement.
Comparing gross shell volume with required liquid capacity
A tank’s exterior size or gross internal volume is not automatically the same as its approved operating liquid capacity.
Rounding down to a smaller tank
If the controlling planning value falls between available sizes, the calculator rounds upward. Never reduce the required capacity simply to match a cheaper or easier-to-install tank.
Expecting a larger tank to fix a bad drainfield
Tank size cannot correct unsuitable soil, insufficient vertical separation, a high water table, inadequate infiltrative area, poor distribution, or an undersized drainfield.
What This Calculator Does Not Determine
Septic tank capacity is only one component of an onsite wastewater system. EPA describes a conventional system as a septic tank followed by a drainfield or subsurface wastewater infiltration system where additional treatment and dispersal occur.
Drainfield size
The calculator does not determine trench or bed area, soil loading rate, infiltrative surface, distribution layout, or reserve field requirements.
Soil and groundwater suitability
It does not evaluate soil texture, restrictive layers, percolation or loading criteria, seasonal groundwater, bedrock separation, flooding, or slope limitations.
Tank structural design
It does not verify watertightness, buoyancy, burial depth, traffic loading, concrete or polymer structural rating, riser loading, or manufacturer installation limits.
Nonresidential or high-strength wastewater
The bedroom reference is intended for residential planning. Restaurants, laundries, schools, commercial kitchens, medical uses, and other nonresidential facilities can require different flow and wastewater-strength criteria.

The EPA reference used by the calculator is 900 gallons for three bedrooms. Because the calculator’s default local planning floor is 1,000 gallons, the default three-bedroom result is 1,000 gallons. Enter a different local minimum when required by your jurisdiction.
What size septic tank does the calculator use for a 4-bedroom house?
The bedroom reference is 1,000 gallons for four bedrooms, so the default result is 1,000 gallons when the local minimum also remains at 1,000 gallons. Many current jurisdictions require a larger four-bedroom tank, which is why the local-minimum input must be checked before using the result for a real project.
What size septic tank does the calculator use for a 5-bedroom house?
The EPA bedroom reference is 1,250 gallons for five bedrooms. With the default 1,000-gallon local floor, the bedroom reference controls and the calculator returns 1,250 gallons.
Why does my county require a different tank size?
Septic requirements are jurisdiction-specific. The calculator uses a historical EPA residential reference only as a planning baseline. Your county or state can adopt a different minimum, bedroom table, design-flow basis, compartment rule, or approved tank standard. Enter the local minimum when known and follow the permitting authority for final sizing.
Does a bigger septic tank mean I can use a smaller drainfield?
No. Tank capacity and drainfield capacity solve different problems. The tank provides settling and primary treatment, while the drainfield must accept and treat the effluent in suitable soil. A larger tank does not create additional soil absorption capacity.
Can I use the calculator to check an existing septic tank?
Yes, as a planning comparison. Enter the documented existing or proposed liquid capacity in Advanced Options. A capacity comparison does not verify the tank’s condition, watertightness, structural rating, compartments, installation, or legal approval.
Does the number of bathrooms affect septic tank size?
The calculator above uses bedroom count, not bathroom count. Some jurisdictions also evaluate plumbing fixture units, design flow, or other loading criteria, so additional bathrooms or high-flow fixtures can matter under the applicable local method even when they do not directly change this calculator’s bedroom lookup.
Should a future bedroom, unfinished room, or ADU count?
Use the bedroom count and dwelling configuration recognized by the permitting authority. Potential bedrooms, future build-out, accessory dwelling units, and convertible rooms can be treated differently by jurisdiction, so do not rely on room labels alone when establishing the permitted design count.
