Use an em dash as “none permitted in this raceway size,” not as missing data. Nominal EMT trade size is not its actual inside diameter.

How to Use the Pipe Fill Chart

  1. Confirm the raceway is EMT and the conductors are the same THHN, THWN, or THWN-2 construction.
  2. Select the conductor size and the proposed EMT trade size.
  3. Read the maximum count, then enter the planned count to check whether the selected size fits.
  4. Use the first-listed-size result when sizing from conductor count.
  5. Complete separate ampacity, adjustment, voltage-drop, grounding, bending, and pulling checks.

Terminology: “Pipe fill” is common field language. “Conduit fill” or “raceway fill” is the precise electrical term.

Area Method and Worked Examples

For mixed conductor sizes, add the approximate area of every insulated conductor and compare the total with the allowable raceway area.

Fill relationshipFill (%) = occupied conductor area ÷ total raceway area × 100

For same-size conductors, the Annex C table provides the maximum count directly and avoids errors caused by rounding intermediate table values.

Example: nine #12 conductors

Nine #12 AWG THHN/THWN-2 conductors are listed for 1/2-in. EMT. The approximate occupied area is 9 × 0.0133 = 0.1197 in².

Interpretation: the listed count fits, but it is at the maximum count for that trade size; ten requires the next listed EMT size.

Common Pipe Fill Mistakes

Using nominal conduit size as ID

Trade size is a designation, not the raceway’s actual internal diameter or area.

Ignoring conductor insulation

Conduit fill uses the outside dimensions of the insulated conductor, not bare copper area.

Using 40% for every case

The conductor-count condition changes the permitted fill basis.

Stopping after fill

Physical space is separate from ampacity adjustment, pulling feasibility, and local code compliance.
