How to Read Rivet Sizes
A blind rivet selection has several dimensions that answer different questions. The nominal diameter identifies the body-size family. The rivet length is the body length in the source table. The grip range is the material-thickness interval the cited rivet row is intended to cover. The hole size and drill designation identify the source drilling requirement.
- Nominal diameter
- The rivet size family, such as 1/8 in. It is not the grip thickness.
- Grip range
- The permitted total thickness interval for the joined stack in this source table.
- Rivet length
- The source body length; it should not be substituted for grip range.
- Hole size
- The source clearance-hole interval associated with that diameter family.
How to Measure Grip Thickness
- Measure each layer the rivet will actually clamp at the fastener location.
- Add the layers to obtain the total stack thickness; include shims or coatings when their thickness is significant to the fit.
- Use the actual assembled stack rather than a nominal single-sheet gauge when possible.
- Choose a diameter based on the joint design, then find a source row whose grip interval contains the total thickness.
- Verify the final rivet family and installation requirements with the current manufacturer or governing engineering specification.
Rivet Diameter, Hole Size, and Drill Size
The selected diameter family also governs the hole requirement in this reference. A hole that is too small can prevent insertion, while an oversized or damaged hole can compromise how a specific rivet product sets. The table’s hole ranges are source values—not universal tolerances for every product sold under the same nominal diameter.
Metric and Inch Rivet Sizes
The source table is inch-based. Metric display values on this page are conversions calculated with exactly 25.4 mm per inch; they do not turn an inch designation into a native metric standard size. ISO 15977:2002, for example, covers one specific open-end blind-rivet family with nominal diameters from 2.4 mm through 6.4 mm, but its normative tables are not reproduced here.
Worked Rivet Selection Examples
Example 1: 1/8 in rivet at a grip boundary
Assumption: the joint calls for the 1/8 in source family and the assembled material stack measures 0.125 in.
Table 2-2 places 0.125 in at the upper boundary of Rivet No. 42’s 0.063–0.125 in grip range. The next listed row begins at 0.126 in, so the first qualifying source row is No. 42.
Sanity check: 0.125 in is included because the selector treats published lower and upper bounds as inclusive. Final product suitability still requires manufacturer verification.
Example 2: 3/16 in rivet for a 0.300 in stack
Assumption: the joint calls for the 3/16 in source family and total grip is 0.300 in.
0.300 in lies inside the 0.251–0.375 in source grip interval, so Rivet No. 66 is the first qualifying row. That row lists a 0.527 in rivet length and a 0.192–0.196 in hole range with a #11 drill.
Sanity check: the selector does not infer strength or approve the joint; it only identifies the dimensional/grip row in the cited table.
Blind Rivet Types Are Not Interchangeable
“Blind rivet” describes a broad fastener category. Open-end, closed-end, multi-grip, structural, countersunk, large-flange, aluminum, steel, stainless, copper, and specialty products can use different grip ranges, installation-hole requirements, mandrels, strengths, and qualification rules.
