These are maximum overall case-envelope dimensions from the approved reference source. A battery that fits the measured box can still be wrong for the vehicle because terminal position, cable reach, hold-down, chemistry, electrical ratings, venting, and OEM requirements also matter.

What Automotive Battery Group Size Means

A BCI group number is a fitment classification, not a simple capacity ranking. The group identifies a standardized physical family, while the correct replacement also depends on terminal arrangement, hold-down details, chemistry and electrical performance requirements.

Size tells you
The standardized case envelope used to check length, width and height.
Size does not tell you
Whether a specific battery meets the vehicle’s required CCA, reserve capacity, chemistry or electronics requirements.
Suffixes matter
Designations such as R or F are part of the group identity and can indicate a different terminal arrangement or configuration.

Worked Battery Size Examples

Example 1: Look up Group 94R

Assumption: The existing battery label clearly shows 94R.

Search 94R. The reference row shows a maximum overall envelope of 315 × 175 × 190 mm, approximately 12.40 × 6.89 × 7.48 in.

Interpretation: This confirms the case envelope only. It does not approve a battery for a particular vehicle; verify the OEM fitment, terminals, hold-down, chemistry and required electrical ratings.

Example 2: Check a measured tray

Assumption: A rectangular battery space measures 280 × 176 × 191 mm and the battery cannot be rotated.

Enter those values in the fit finder. A candidate must satisfy all three tests: L ≤ 280 mm, W ≤ 176 mm and H ≤ 191 mm. Extra clearance on one axis cannot compensate for a battery that exceeds another axis.

Sanity check: Even a dimensionally qualifying group can fail because of cable reach, post polarity, hold-down shape or vehicle requirements.

BCI, H/LN, DIN and EN Battery Size Names

European and North American naming systems overlap but are not universally interchangeable. The approved Caterpillar BCI/DIN/EN reference chart lists examples such as Group 47 with H5/L2, Group 48 with H6/L3, Group 49 with H8/L5, Group 94R with H7, and Group 95R with H9/L6. Treat these as reference cross-links, not automatic vehicle-fit approval.

Common Battery Replacement Mistakes

  • Choosing a battery because the outer dimensions fit while ignoring terminal polarity and cable reach.
  • Assuming a larger group number means a physically larger or more powerful battery.
  • Comparing only CCA while ignoring the required chemistry, reserve capacity, venting, hold-down, or vehicle energy-management requirements.
  • Treating an H/LN/DIN/EN cross-reference as guaranteed interchangeability.
  • Rotating a battery in the tray without confirming that posts, cables, venting and hold-down features remain correct.

Confirm the vehicle’s specified group, terminal position/polarity, hold-down, cable reach, chemistry, voltage, CCA/RC requirements and any battery-management-system requirements with current vehicle or manufacturer fitment information before replacement.

Data Sources, Scope, and Limitations

Limited transformed dimensional reference for common 12 V passenger-car and light-truck groups. Rows with unresolved dimensional conflicts between the approved Caterpillar guide and BCI verification source are omitted.

Battery Council International (BCI) is the controlling industry authority for group-size terminology. Published rows here are limited to the automotive scope in the research handoff and were cross-checked against BCI. Where the approved Caterpillar dimensional guide and BCI verification PDF materially disagreed, the row was withheld rather than averaged. Full BCI table reproduction and bulk CSV export are intentionally not provided.

Automotive Battery Size FAQ

Use the vehicle’s current manufacturer/service information or an authoritative fitment database; dimensions alone do not establish the correct replacement group.

Use the Group Size as a Dimensional Check, Not Final Fitment Approval

Start with the battery group specified for the vehicle. Use this chart to confirm L × W × H, compare nearby groups, or test a measured rectangular space. Before buying or installing a replacement, verify the terminal arrangement, hold-down, cable reach, chemistry and required electrical ratings with current vehicle-specific information.
