What NEMA Enclosure Ratings Mean

NEMA enclosure Types describe defined environmental protection characteristics for electrical equipment enclosures. ANSI/NEMA EN 10250-2024 covers electrical equipment rated not more than 1000 V and separates indoor Types, indoor/outdoor Types, and hazardous-classified-location Types.

This chart focuses on the 18 main Type designations. Current NEMA 10250 enclosure guidance also identifies ancillary ratings such as PW and XH for specialized cleaning/corrosion conditions; verify the current standard when those conditions are part of the specification.

The designation is not a single protection score. Type 4X adds a corrosion-related distinction to the Type 4 environmental envelope, while Type 6 and 6P address submersion conditions that are not represented by simply “going up” one Type number.

Start with the actual exposure—location, solids, water, corrosion, ice, and immersion—then verify the specific enclosure product. Do not select by Type number alone.

How to Use the NEMA Enclosure Rating Chart

  1. Identify location first. Separate indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, and hazardous/classified-location applications before comparing water or dust protection.
  2. Define the worst credible environmental exposure. Distinguish rain from washdown, windblown dust from indoor circulating dust, and temporary from prolonged submersion.
  3. Flag special conditions. Corrosion, external icing, knockouts, oils/coolants, and classified-location requirements can change the viable Type.
  4. Compare candidate rows. Use the selector as a screen, then compare the exact differences rather than choosing the numerically highest designation.
  5. Verify the complete product. Confirm listing/certification, entries, seals, doors, hardware, accessories, orientation, and manufacturer installation instructions.

Common NEMA Enclosure Types Compared

3R vs 4

Type 3R is commonly associated with outdoor precipitation protection, while Type 4 adds protection for splashing and hose-directed water and addresses windblown dust. A rain-rated enclosure should not automatically be treated as a washdown enclosure.

4 vs 4X

Type 4X carries the Type 4 environmental characteristics plus an additional level of corrosion protection. “4X” is a complete-enclosure performance designation, not merely a statement that the enclosure is stainless steel or nonmetallic.

6 vs 6P

Both address hose-directed water and submersion, but Type 6 is tied to occasional temporary submersion while Type 6P extends to occasional prolonged submersion and includes an additional corrosion-protection distinction.

12 vs 12K

Both are indoor Types for circulating dust/lint/fibers and dripping or light splashing. The key designation difference is that Type 12 is constructed without knockouts while Type 12K permits knockouts.

NEMA Ratings vs IP Ratings

NEMA Types and IEC IP codes overlap in the broad idea of enclosure protection, but they are not interchangeable classification systems. An IP code expresses defined ingress-protection characteristics through its characteristic numerals; a NEMA Type may address additional environmental and construction considerations.

Do not reverse-convert

Do not convert an IP code directly into a guaranteed NEMA Type. If an IP designation is specified, use the IP Rating Chart to interpret that code, then evaluate the applicable NEMA requirements separately.

Why the Complete Enclosure Assembly Matters

An enclosure Type applies to the completed enclosure configuration, not to a sheet of material by itself. Doors, gaskets, covers, fasteners, cable and conduit entries, vents, drains, operators, viewing windows, modifications, mounting orientation, and installation practices can affect the final protection provided.

For example, specifying “Type 4X material” is not equivalent to verifying that a finished assembly maintains the required Type 4X performance after penetrations and accessories are installed. Product instructions and the applicable listing or certification remain part of the engineering check.

Hazardous Locations Need Separate Evaluation

ANSI/NEMA EN 10250-2024 references Type 7 for Class I, Division 1 explosion-proof enclosures and Type 9 for Class II, Division 1 dust-ignition-proof enclosures. The standard points those hazardous-location requirements to ANSI/UL 1203, with the associated area classifications and installation requirements governed by the NEC.

The selector therefore stops at a classified-location warning instead of choosing between Types 7 and 9 from ordinary weather, water, or dust inputs. Area classification, the hazardous material present, equipment listing, temperature requirements, wiring methods, and applicable code provisions must be evaluated together.

Type 4X adds an additional corrosion-protection distinction to Type 4, but “better” is too broad because the correct Type still depends on the application’s complete environmental and installation requirements.
