Required Colors vs Common Wiring Conventions

White/gray grounded-conductor identification, green/green-yellow/bare equipment-grounding identification, and high-leg marking have defined NEC scope and exceptions.
Identification required
Where applicable, multiple voltage systems require phase and system identification plus posted documentation. The exact ordinary phase colors can be locally defined.
Common convention
Black-red-blue and brown-orange-yellow are useful field patterns, but neither is a universal NEC-mandated phase sequence.
How to Use the Chart Safely
- Identify the jurisdiction, locally adopted code edition, wiring system, and equipment standard.
- Read the panel schedule, posted facility color legend, one-line diagram, circuit drawings, and equipment labels.
- De-energize and establish an electrically safe work condition where required by the applicable procedure.
- Use appropriately rated test equipment and a verified test method; color does not establish absence of voltage.
- Trace both ends and confirm conductor function before connection, reidentification, or modification.
- Escalate ambiguous, damaged, legacy, or modified wiring to qualified personnel.
U.S. Single-Phase and Three-Phase Examples
Example 1: 120/240 V split-phase panel
Assumption: A U.S. premises panel is documented as 120/240 V split-phase. Black and red are commonly used for L1 and L2, white for the grounded/neutral conductor, and green or bare for the equipment grounding conductor. Sanity check: the drawing, panel legend, circuit tracing, and testing must agree; color alone cannot prove any conductor’s function or voltage state.
Example 2: orange conductor in a 277/480 V facility
Observation: An orange-insulated conductor appears in a commercial facility. Orange may be a customary phase-B color for a 277/480 V system, while orange or another effective marking is used for a high leg in a qualifying midpoint-grounded delta system. Conclusion: do not classify it from color. Check topology, nominal voltages, posted identification, drawings, and test results.
NEC and IEC Colors Are Not Interchangeable
NFPA 70 is an installation code adopted by jurisdictions, often with amendments. IEC 60445 is a basic safety publication intended for use by standards committees and applies where an installation, product, or national standard invokes it. Brown/blue/green-yellow on imported equipment does not automatically establish the rules for the surrounding U.S. premises wiring, and U.S. customary colors should not be projected onto an IEC-governed installation.
Mixed equipment: use the equipment documentation, terminal designations, applicable product standard, installation code, and verified circuit measurements together.
Neutral, Grounded Conductor, and Equipment Ground Are Different
Grounded conductor
A circuit conductor intentionally grounded at a specified point. In many systems it serves as the neutral, but the terms are not universally identical.
Neutral conductor
The conductor connected to the neutral point of a system and intended to carry current under normal operating conditions.
Equipment grounding conductor
A conductive fault-current path connecting normally non-current-carrying metal parts to the grounded system or grounding electrode conductor as specified.
Bonding at a permitted point does not make the neutral and equipment grounding conductor interchangeable downstream.
Legacy, Reidentified, and Modified Wiring
- Reidentification permissions depend on conductor size, wiring method, cable type, application, edition, and specific exceptions.
- A piece of colored tape at one termination is not universally sufficient for every conductor or application.
- Older installations may reflect a prior edition, a local convention, or work that was never compliant.
- Repairs and modifications can leave inconsistent colors between accessible points.
- When identification conflicts with measurements or drawings, stop and resolve the discrepancy rather than choosing the expected color meaning.
