Identify the Connector Model—Not Just the Color
How to Choose the Correct Wire Nut
- Identify the conductor material. This reference is for the cited Cu/Cu combinations only.
- Write down every conductor gauge and quantity. Example: 2 × #12 + 1 × #14 AWG copper.
- Match the full bundle to the exact connector model. Do not assume that a gauge range or cap color means every combination in between is approved.
- Use the model-specific strip and installation instructions. Follow the current product labeling when it differs from a general reference.
Why Physical Fit Is Not Enough
Are Wire Nut Colors Standardized?
No universal rule makes every gray, blue, orange, yellow or red twist-on connector interchangeable. Color is useful for identifying a product within a particular manufacturer and series, but the exact model and listed conductor bundle are the decision points.
A printed gauge range is also not permission to use every wire count and every mixed-gauge bundle inside that range. Write the bundle explicitly—for example, 2 × #12 + 1 × #14 copper—and verify that complete combination. Source [1]
Wire Nut Strip Length Chart
| Model | Conductor condition | Strip length |
|---|---|---|
| 71B | Solid | 1/4 in (6 mm) |
| 71B | Stranded | 5/16 in (8 mm) |
| 72B | #16 AWG and smaller conductors | 1/2 in (13 mm) |
| 72B | All other listed conductors | 3/8 in (9.5 mm) |
| 73B | #16 AWG and smaller conductors | 3/8 in (9.5 mm) |
| 73B | All other listed conductors | 5/16 in (8 mm) |
| 74B | #16 AWG and smaller conductors | 7/16 in (11 mm) |
| 74B | All other listed conductors | 3/8 in (9.5 mm) |
| 76B | #16 AWG and smaller conductors | 1/2 in (13 mm) |
| 76B | #14 AWG and larger conductors | 7/16 in (11 mm) |
“Smaller conductor” means smaller copper cross section, so #18 AWG is smaller than #16 AWG even though its gauge number is higher. Follow the instructions attached to the exact product in hand if its labeling differs. Source [3]
How a Twist-On Wire Connector Holds the Conductors
Why You Cannot Size a Wire Nut by Total AWG Area
The arithmetic sum of copper areas cannot establish connector approval. Bundles with similar total copper area can have different numbers of conductor interfaces, strand behavior and physical arrangements.
That is why this page does not collapse multiple conductors into an “equivalent AWG” and return a color. For a bundle not shown here, use the manufacturer’s complete listed-combination sheet and match every conductor in the exact model entry. Source [1]
Solid, Stranded, Aluminum and Location Limitations
Solid and stranded copper: The cited combination list permits solid and/or stranded copper unless a row is specifically marked otherwise. Some entries carry construction-specific notes, so check the exact bundle rather than assuming every variant is interchangeable. Source [1]
Aluminum: The cited Wire-Nut combination listing is Cu/Cu only and explicitly says not to use those combinations on aluminum wire. Aluminum or mixed-metal work requires a connector system specifically identified for that application. Source [1]
Wet, buried or other special locations: Do not extend this dry-location reference to a sealed, direct-burial, wet-location or otherwise special installation unless the exact connector system is identified for that service. Follow the current product instructions and applicable installation requirements. Source [3]
Installation Checks the Chart Cannot Replace
- Shut off power and verify a safe condition before working on the circuit.
- Confirm the connector model, conductor material, exact gauges, counts and any construction-specific restrictions.
- Strip conductors to the length specified for that model and conductor condition.
- Follow the connector’s assembly instructions. IDEAL states that pre-twisting is not required for this Wire-Nut series; do not generalize that statement to every connector design. Source [2]
- Inspect the finished splice and ensure the enclosure has adequate space for the actual installation.
Making a larger splice? Use the Box Fill Calculator to check conductor, grounding, clamp and device volume in the enclosure.

Wire Nut Size Chart FAQs
What size wire nut should I use for two 14-gauge wires?
For the IDEAL series referenced here, both 73B Orange and larger listed models can include certain 2 × #14 copper combinations. Use the exact model entry and installation instructions rather than choosing from color alone.
What size wire nut should I use for three 14-gauge wires?
This page includes 3 × #14 AWG copper as an explicitly listed combination for IDEAL 74B Yellow and 76B Red. Verify conductor construction and current product instructions before installation.
What size wire nut should I use for two 12-gauge wires?
This reference includes 2 × #12 AWG copper for IDEAL 74B Yellow and 76B Red. More than one listed connector can fit the same bundle, so the exact model and installation conditions still matter.
How many #12 wires fit in an IDEAL 76B red wire nut?
The cited manufacturer information includes one to four #12 copper conductors for 76B, with four #12 conductors shown in this page’s common-combination table. This statement is model-specific and should not be applied to every red connector.
Can a yellow wire nut connect three #12 wires?
IDEAL 74B Yellow explicitly includes three #12 copper conductors in the referenced data. That does not establish a universal rule for all yellow twist-on connectors.
Are wire nut colors standardized?
No universal color-capacity rule should be used across manufacturers and product families. Color can help identify a connector, but the exact model and listed bundle control selection.
Can I mix solid and stranded copper wire?
The cited IDEAL combination listing permits solid and/or stranded copper unless a particular combination is marked otherwise. Check the exact bundle and any construction-specific note.
Can these wire nuts connect aluminum and copper?
No. The combination listing used for this chart is explicitly Cu/Cu only. Aluminum or mixed-metal work requires a connector system specifically identified for that use.
How much insulation should I strip?
There is no universal strip length. The value depends on the exact connector model and, for some models, conductor gauge or solid/stranded construction. Use the strip-length table above and the current product instructions.
Do I need to pre-twist the wires?
IDEAL states that pre-twisting is not required for the Wire-Nut series referenced here. Do not generalize that instruction to other connector families; follow the exact product directions.
Does a larger wire nut always make a better connection?
No. A connector can be physically larger yet still be outside the approved combination for a small bundle. Physical fit does not replace the product listing.
