How to Read a Deck Joist Span Table
- Measure the supported span. Use the applicable clear distance between supports shown by the governing framing configuration; do not substitute total joist length.
- Identify the lumber. The stamp or approved documentation must support the species and grade used by the table. This page is intentionally limited to Southern Pine No. 2.
- Confirm spacing. This bounded page uses 16 in. on center. Decking materials can impose a tighter joist-spacing limit even when the joist itself is adequate.
- Find the first maximum span at or above your requirement. Equality passes. The matcher never interpolates between joist sizes or extends values beyond the listed range.
- Check the rest of the load path. Joist capacity does not validate beams, posts, footings, ledgers, fasteners, lateral connections, guards, stairs, or the optional cantilever.
What “maximum span” means here
The maximum span is a tabulated limit for the stated reference condition. It is not a promise that any piece of lumber labeled with the same nominal depth will work under different loading, moisture, grade, treatment, or jurisdictional conditions.
What Controls Maximum Deck Joist Span
- Joist depth
- Deeper members generally span farther, but only the listed source values should drive this lookup.
- Species and grade
- Strength and stiffness values differ by species group and grade. Do not transfer the Southern Pine No. 2 cells to another lumber stamp.
- Joist spacing
- Changing on-center spacing changes tributary load per joist. This page is fixed at 16 in. o.c. to keep the standards excerpt bounded.
- Loads

Deck Joist Span Examples
Example 1: Size a joist for a 10 ft span
Assumptions: Southern Pine No. 2, 16 in. o.c., bounded reference conditions apply, no unusual concentrated load.
Convert the requirement to canonical inches: 10 ft × 12 = 120 in.
The 2×6 maximum is 108 in., so it does not qualify. The 2×8 maximum is 142 in., so it is the first listed size that meets the requirement.
Result: 2×8, with a tabulated margin of 142 − 120 = 22 in. (1 ft 10 in.).
Sanity check: The next shallower listed member fails, which confirms the first-qualifying logic. Final deck design still requires the rest of the framing and local-code checks.
Example 2: Check a 2×10 at 14 ft
Assumptions: Same bounded Southern Pine No. 2 and 16-in.-o.c. reference condition.
Required span: 14 ft = 168 in. The 2×10 listed maximum is also 168 in.
Result: The table check passes exactly with zero tabulated margin because equality is permitted by the lookup rule.
Sanity check: Increasing the span to 14 ft 1 in. makes the 2×10 fail this bounded lookup; the tool must then move to the next qualifying row rather than round the input down.
Deck Joist Span Is Not Floor Joist Span
Interior floor-joist tables and exterior deck-joist tables can look similar, but their prescribed assumptions are not interchangeable. Deck framing has exterior service conditions, deck-specific span and cantilever rules, decking-spacing constraints, and exposure considerations that do not belong in a generic interior floor lookup.
Common mistake
Do not take a value from an interior Floor Joist Span Chart and use it as a deck-joist approval. Use the deck provisions that match the actual framing condition.
When This Table Does Not Apply
Use a different source or design method when
- The lumber species or grade is not Southern Pine No. 2.
- The joists are not spaced 16 in. on center.
- The deck supports a hot tub, roof, masonry feature, large planter, or other unusual load.
- The members are engineered I-joists, LVL, SCL, glulam, or another proprietary engineered product.
