Schedule 40 & 80 PVC Pipe Dimensions
A 2-inch PVC pipe measures 2.375 inches OD. Both schedules have that same outside diameter; Schedule 80 has a thicker wall and smaller inside diameter.
No matching IPS PVC size was found. Try the nominal size or compare your actual OD with the listed measurements.

ID = OD − 2 × minimum wall. IDs are calculated references, not guaranteed measured bore dimensions. A dash means that size/schedule is not listed in the cited product specification.

How to Measure PVC Pipe Size
- Measure the outside diameter with calipers across the pipe, not across a fitting socket.
- Match the measured OD to the chart. An OD of 2.375 inches (60.33 mm) corresponds to nominal 2-inch IPS PVC.
- Confirm the marking. OD cannot tell Schedule 40 from Schedule 80; check printed size, schedule, material, and standard.
Only have circumference? Divide it by π to estimate the outside diameter, then use the chart. This chart does not cover all PVC, electrical conduit, SDR, sewer, or metric pipe products.
PVC Schedule 40 vs. 80: What Changes?
The outside diameter is the same for the same nominal IPS size. Schedule 80 adds wall thickness inward, leaving a smaller calculated inside diameter. Both schedules use nominal pipe size for compatible pipe/fitting families; the exact product and joint must still be checked.
For this example, the Schedule 80 calculated inside diameter is 0.128 inches smaller than Schedule 40. The difference matters for flow capacity and clearance; it does not by itself determine safe system pressure.
PVC Pressure Ratings at 73°F
For reference, Westlake’s listed ASTM pressure ratings at 73°F with a 2:1 safety factor vary by nominal size and schedule. A pipe pressure rating is not a complete system design rating; temperature, joints, fittings, fluid compatibility, codes, and the purchased product can change the limits.

Dimensional Standards, Sources & Limits
This reference uses the US Iron Pipe Size (IPS) system for Schedule 40 and 80 PVC dimensions. The source is Westlake Pipe & Fittings’ Schedule 40 ASTM D1785/D2665 and Schedule 80 ASTM D1785 product specification. Outside diameter, minimum wall thickness, and 73°F pipe pressure ratings are published data; millimeter equivalents and IDs here are calculated.
- Westlake Pipe & Fittings — PVC Schedule 40 & 80 Product Specification (PDF)Dimensional table and manufacturer’s pressure ratings; see page 2.
- ASTM D1785-26 — PVC Plastic Pipe, Schedules 40, 80 and 120Relevant standard and scope. ASTM specification text is separate from the manufacturer’s public product table.
Important: Do not use these values as a substitute for SDR pressure pipe, CPVC, electrical conduit, sewer pipe, metric PVC or another product family. A dash means the cited Westlake sheet did not list the value; it does not prove no product exists. The manufacturer’s Schedule 40 DWV dual-rating does not cover nominal 1/2, 3/4, 1, or 5 in sizes under ASTM D2665.
PVC Pipe Size Chart FAQ
What is the actual outside diameter of 2-inch PVC pipe?
For the IPS PVC shown here, 2-inch nominal pipe has a 2.375-inch OD (60.33 mm). Its calculated ID is 2.067 inches for Schedule 40 and 1.939 inches for Schedule 80.
Do Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC have the same outside diameter?
Yes. In this IPS PVC product family, both schedules have the same outside diameter at a given nominal size. Their inside diameters and wall thicknesses differ.
How do I know which PVC fitting size to buy?
For compatible IPS pipe and fittings, use the nominal pipe size shown in the first column, not the measured outside diameter as the fitting label. Verify the fitting standard and connection type.
Why is the inside diameter labeled calculated?
It uses the nominal OD and published minimum wall: ID = OD − 2 × minimum wall. Manufacturing tolerances mean it is not a guarantee of the bore in every pipe.
Can outside diameter tell me if a pipe is Schedule 40 or 80?
No. OD identifies the nominal IPS size but is the same for both schedules. Check the pipe marking or compare a reliable wall thickness measurement with the product specification.
Does this chart apply to electrical PVC conduit or SDR pipe?
Not automatically. Conduit, SDR-series, sewer, and metric PVC can use different standards and dimensional systems. Check the material markings before using this IPS reference.
