ID = OD − 2t. Approximate plain-end weight uses W = 10.6802t(OD − t) lb/ft. Capacity assumes an empty circular bore and excludes lining, deposits, corrosion, and dimensional tolerance.

Pipe Schedule Chart Key Takeaways
- Schedule controls nominal wall thickness, not OD. The OD stays fixed for a given NPS.
- Higher schedules usually reduce bore and capacity. Compare ID or area—not just the schedule number.
- STD and XS are aliases only where the wall matches. In this range, Schedule 40 matches STD through NPS 10, while NPS 12 Schedule 40 does not.
- Calculated ID is nominal. Actual bore can change with tolerance, corrosion, lining, and deposits.
Scope and Important Limitations
This page covers a high-utility subset of ASME B36.10 wrought-steel dimensions: Schedules 10, 40, 80, and 160 from NPS 1/2 through NPS 12. It does not reproduce the complete copyrighted standard or cover every available schedule, size, stainless S-schedule, plastic SDR system, tubing series, pressure class, or project specification.
How to Read and Use the Pipe Schedule Chart
- Choose NPS or DN and the schedule required by the specification.
- Read OD and nominal wall thickness from the reference row.
- Use the calculated ID for preliminary flow area, volume, and velocity work.
- Use weight for estimating only; purchased pipe may vary with material and tolerance.
- Verify final selection against the purchased standard, governing piping code, and project specification.
Dimension and capacity relationships
ID = OD − 2t
Internal area = π(ID²)/4
Water capacity = internal area × 12/231 gal/ft
Worked Pipe Schedule Examples
NPS 2: Schedule 40 vs 80
Both pipes have a 2.375 in OD. Schedule 40 has a 0.154 in wall and 2.067 in ID; Schedule 80 has a 0.218 in wall and 1.939 in ID.
The Schedule 80 bore area is about 12% smaller, so the same flow produces higher velocity before other losses are considered.
NPS 6: Schedule 10 vs 160
Both pipes have a 6.625 in OD. Schedule 10 has a 0.134 in wall, while Schedule 160 has a 0.719 in wall.
The much thicker Schedule 160 wall sharply increases weight and reduces bore. That tradeoff must be evaluated with the design code and hydraulic requirements.

Pipe Schedule Chart FAQ
Pipe schedule is a standardized wall-thickness designation. For a given NPS, a higher listed schedule generally means a thicker nominal wall and smaller calculated bore.
A thicker wall often increases pressure capability when other conditions are identical, but schedule alone is not a pressure rating. Material, temperature, code rules, tolerance, weld factors, and allowances govern design pressure.
No. They share the same wall thickness for many smaller sizes, but the designations diverge at larger sizes. In this table, NPS 12 Schedule 40 is not labeled STD.
Do not assume they are interchangeable. Schedule 40S belongs to ASME B36.19 stainless-steel dimensions and must be verified by size and material standard.
Use the minimum-ID finder above. It returns the smallest listed NPS and selected schedule whose calculated nominal ID meets or exceeds the entered bore.
Carry the Calculated Bore into the Next Engineering Check
Use NPS and schedule to identify nominal dimensions, then use the calculated ID for preliminary volume, velocity, Reynolds number, and pressure-loss work. Confirm the final material and wall selection with the applicable purchased standard, piping code, and project specification.
